The brief

To turn an existing disused sports hall full of condemned old gym equipment into a purpose built multi use area to help facilitate the school’s growth. All of this was to be carried out with minimal disturbance to the school as it was during term time.

The outcome

What was created was a space which now included a canteen area, an office space and a library, freeing up other space around the school for more classrooms. There were some tricky elements to this build, including the installation of a lift which always comes with it’s own challenges, as precision is key, as well as working within tight confines internally, problem solving the best way how to excavate an internal floor while maintaining the external structure, and creating our own access so as not to cause the school an inconvenience. A large number of new foundations were formed to take the new mezzanine structure spanning the entire length and width of the existing sports hall as well as installing a large scale curtain wall façade. The school were over the moon with what we had created, opening it with a grand opening as something they were very proud to show off, and we have since carried out further works off the back of this with the client.

“I have worked with Meridian Construction Services for a few years, across several of my schools. They are a professional, pro-active and efficient company. Great project management from design consultation through to completion. Communication has always been excellent at each stage of the various projects. They are sensitive to the needs of the schools and work around the various restrictions and often complex demands that come with working in an educational environment, from unexpected OFSTED visits, to playing their part in safeguarding. Staff on site have always been polite and courteous and are respectful to our staff, students and buildings. It has been and continues to be a positive experience working together, and I appreciate the approach and consideration given to our place of work. Thank you!”
